If your mobile device has an OLED panel, you can reduce power consumption by using ’night mode' where available on compatible apps such as book readers like Aldiko on Google Play (bit.ly/Aldiko). OLEDs don’t have backlighting each set of sub-pixel LEDs generate their own light. That means white text on a black background will draw less power than black text on a white background, since black requires little-to-no power and that should improve overall battery life. Combine it with setting screen brightness to minimum (not auto) and you’ll keep the OLED at its lowest possible power consumption, which should improve battery life further.

Switch To An SSD
Solid-state drives (SSDs) not only offer a speed benefit over their hard drive cousins, there’s an additional pay-off in reduced power consumption as well. A typical 2.5-inch notebook hard drive will consume roughly six watts (6W) of power in operation. By comparison, an SSD typically comes in around the two-watt (2W) mark. So not only will you get the benefit of faster read and write speeds, you should also gain some extra battery life. Consider the best option for your budget, but by design a 240GB SSD should last twice as long as a 120GB SSD at equal usage, simply because there are twice as many flash storages cells available.

Dont Let The Battery Go Flat
Devices with built-in batteries can be difficult (and expensive) to repair, so to maximise their useful life, play nice with them. Research shows that lithium-ion batteries prefer being discharged to only 50% rather than all the way to zero keep above 50% and you’ll get more hours overall than regularly full-discharging.

Dropping that backlight level to minimum will improve battery life over keeping it on ‘auto-brightness’. This might cause problems in bright sunlight, but should be fine indoors.

Fastest Charging Mode
Your mobile device will always charge fastest from its supplied AC power adapter. But if you need an alternative, a USB port is better than nothing. If you can, seek out a USB 3.0 port they should charge faster than most USB 2.0 ports. Not all third-party USB chargers will match the supplied adapter, so look after that supplied one!

Remove External Devices
Just because you’ve shut down your notebook doesn’t mean your USB devices switch off as well. I use a USB DVB-T TV tuner, but forgetting to remove it one night, the battery was dead-flat a day later. Top tip: assume any USB device is dragging power from the battery wheather it's booted or not.

Don’t Skimp On RAM
Having too little RAM in your notebook will drain the battery the OS will constantly be paging out data to the hard drive, ensuring it’s on all the time and consuming power. Adding more RAM reduces the paging demands, provides the HDD more sleep time, which reduces power consumption. For most users, 8-12GB should be enough.
