How to turn DVDs into MP4s for use on a portable device

In June 2014. new rules come into force that allow consumers to make copies of digital media for private purposes including backups and ‘format shifting’ (which is essentially what you want to do). However, while the new regulations allow you do to this, the guidelines point out that some anti-copying technologies applied to DVDs are protected by law. If your DVDs don’t contain anti-copying protection then copying DVDs is easy. Use a free tool such as DVDDecrypter (www.dvddecrypter.org.uk) to extract the video and audio files. Insertyour DVD. select IFO from the Mode menu then click the Decrypt button.

You can then use a format-conversion tool such as Handbrake (www.handbrake.fr) to turn the extractedcontent into MP4 files that will work on your portable device. Handbrake will also other video file into MP4, so it will also do the job for your own recordings. Click Source followed by Open File, choose your video and click Open. In the Output Settings section, set Container to MP4 then click Start.
