How To Fix OpenOffice error messages and crashes

Several features in OpenOffice depend on you having a working version of Java installed on your PC. If you see an error message saying ‘JRE is Defective’ or if OpenOffice keeps crashing, then try reinstalling Java by going to www.java.com/en/download/, then clicking ‘Agree and Start Free Download’. If you only use the Writer (word processing) or Calc (spreadsheet) programs, you can disable Java entirely because these programs don’t use it. Click Tools, then Options. In the new dialogue box, click the ‘+’ next to OpenOffice (if it isn’t selected by default), click Java, uncheck the box next to ‘Use a Java runtime environment’, then click OK. Th is should stabilise Writer and Calc, but may stop OpenOffice’s databasemanagement program, Base, from working properly.
